Our Story

The founders of Steps: Richard, Janet and Robbie, met while role playing for the student doctors at Guy’s Hospital Medical School. They played over-talkative patients, silent patients and patients who had to hear some bad news about their state of health. A meeting place had had to be selected where the actors could assemble on the morning of these Communication Skills Courses. It was finally decided that the most convenient, and easily found, location was the flight of steps up to the main entrance of the medical school. Actors would receive a communication ‘Please meet us on the steps of the medical school…’  

And those ‘Steps’ brought us to where we are today.



Named as one of the InnerCity 100 (the top 100 fastest growing businesses in London), we have continued to grow our team, our client list and our global capability.  Steps has a team of 22 permanent staff, operating from offices in London and Pune, India - and we work with a team of over 120 professionally trained, CIPD accredited, associate Actor-Facilitators to deliver training programmes for global clients in the UK and Internationally.  We have associates in regional locations across the UK and in selected regions across the world, combining world class skills and experience with local expertise.

Steps has developed a variety of techniques and methodologies to bring learning topics to life.  We use creative and dynamic live delivery methodologies including role play, interactive drama and simulation (amongst other techniques) – to add a deeper dimension to the learning experience. We believe that blended learning is a fantastic way of engaging hearts and minds and creating a learning intervention that has immediate impact as well as positive scalability.  We have capability to use video production and e-learning as a means of cascading key learning and corporate messaging - and this approach can be supplemented by live, interactive sessions for key stakeholders, large scale events such as simulations or conferences – or can be used as a sustainable, stand alone learning resource. 

Our award-winning live and media-based work focuses on subject areas such as diversity and inclusion, leadership and management, customer service, engagement and change, assessment and development, personal impact, values and ethics and regulatory/compliance training.   Such is the strength of our reputation - around 74% of our work is repeat business, and much of our work comes from client recommendation.   

As a drama-based training company we are unrivalled in the scale of our operation and are at the forefront of the creation and delivery of experiential learning in the UK, Europe and further afield.  Our name is synonymous with high quality drama-based training programmes that engage, inspire and have tangible impact.

We pride ourselves on being responsive to client needs and our planning and resourcing structure allows us to flex and adapt to meet changing requirements.  As the learning landscape changes, we recognise the need to stay abreast of trends and remain agile.  For one client we even delivered via holography – so we’re quite adventurous!
