Recruitment & Selection

Recruiting the best people is critical to the successful development of teams and the growth of the organisation. As the talent pool shrinks, it becomes ever more essential that the right candidates are appointed.

Assessment Centres

Role play and practical case study work have become a key part of the overall assessment process.  The use of professional actors brings added value in terms of realism and challenge for the candidates whilst at the same time allowing assessors greater objectivity.

"This is a much more effective learning experience than having someone stand at the front and give a lecture."
Jenny O’Neill, Senior HR Officer, Buckinghamshire County Council

Steps have been working in recruitment and selection assessment centres for many years and we appreciate that consistency is an essential factor in their success.  Our experience and understanding of the competency framework that is being used enables us to create suitably challenging moments in each exercise.

Assessor Training

We can also provide actors to play ‘mock’ candidates as part of the assessor training process.  Again, our role players are aware that consistency is essential and are able to work to carefully designed character briefs to provide appropriate challenges for the delegates.

Interviewing Skills

Steps have worked with many clients to develop practical skills in selection interviewing, running comprehensive sessions which outline key behaviours/approaches, followed by an opportunity for delegates to put the theory into practice.  Covering areas such as:

  • Creating the right environment
  • Rapport building
  • Questioning technique
  • Listening skills
  • Opening & closing the interview
  • Searching for evidence
  • Handling questions
  • Selling the company

We can also incorporate the use of competency frameworks, theoretical models, company policies and the legal perspective.

“Many head teachers and governors have never been trained in how to conduct interviews.  We developed the content for this workshop and Steps helped us to package it in an interesting and fun way, to make it attractive to the target audience. This is a much more effective learning experience than having someone stand at the front and give a lecture.”
Jenny O’Neill, Senior HR Officer, Buckinghamshire County Council.
